Transformer explodes in Patna Civil Court; two lawyers killed, six injured

Two lawyers were killed while over half a dozen sustained serious injury when a transformer exploded at the Patna Civil Court on Wednesday afternoon.

One of the deceased lawyers has been identified as Devendra Kumar, who tragically lost his life on the spot. The other deceased succumbed to his injuries during treatment in the hospital. The injured were shifted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

Since the structure was demolished for renovation, a section of lawyers had set up a make-shift offices elsewhere. A few under the transformer that exploded today. The preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion was caused by a leak in the transformer’s oil and a subsequent failure in the metering unit, a device mounted on the transformer for High Tension (HT) consumers to signal the meter. Technical malfunction is being considered as a possible cause of the fire.

Mrs Chhaya Mishra, Vice President of Patna High Court Advocates Association demanded prosecution of the officers concerned of Bihar state power distribution company for transformer blast in Patna civil court.

She said, “Our sympathy goes to the family of our colleagues. We extend our support to the other lawyers who got burn injuries and are admitted in Patna medical College hospital.”

Mrs Mishra said the association demanded immediate action and registration of FIR against the officers responsible for the death of the lawyer in the transformer blast. Their negligence in maintenance of the transformer caused the blast.

They demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh be paid to the family of the deceased advocates and urged the government to bear the medical expenses of the injured.
