Army chopper crash kills two pilots in Udhampur

New Delhi, September 21

Two pilots of the Indian Army’s Aviation Corps died when the helicopter they were flying crash-landed near Patnitop in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning.

The victims have been identified as Major Rohit Kumar and Major Anuj Rajput. The single-engine “Cheetah” chopper took off from Nagrota, the headquarters of 16 Corps in Udhampur, Tuesday morning on a training sortie. It crash-landed at Shiv Garh Dhar area in Udhampur district.

The villagers from nearby area were first to reach the spot and evacuated both the pilots who were critically injured. They were immediately rushed to the hospital.

“Both the pilots were critically injured during helicopter crash-landing and were evacuated to the nearest medical facility but they succumbed to their injuries,” police officials in Udhampur said.

This is the second incident of an Army Aviation helicopter crashing in six weeks. On August 3, a Rudra helicopter had crashed into the lake of the Ranjit Sagar Dam across the Ravi. Both the pilots were killed in the incident.
