A couple of informal “chats”, surprisingly, made former US President Barack Obama to read the personality of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others.

To put things in context, Barack Obama, a person who has generally been measured in his words, spoke about Rahul Gandhi in his newly published political memoir “A Promised Land”.

“He has a nervous, unformed quality about him, as if he were a student who’d done the coursework and was eager to impress the teacher but deep down lacked either the aptitude or the passion to master the subject,” the book reportedly underlines.

The former US President’s observation is probably based on “first impression” as he has met the Congress leader hardly a couple of times. “Had a fruitful chat with President @BarackObama Great to meet him again,” Rahul Gandhi had posted, along with a photograph, in 2017.

It was during this “fruitful chat” that Barack read Rahul. Though the issue might assume political proportion but it should be avoided; after all the character and personality of an Indian leader is the internal matter of the country and not a subject of assessment by any International leader.

Tariq Anwar, the Congress leader and party general secretary, was to the point while reacting to the development. “Barack Obama and Rahul Gandhi must have met briefly, probably 8-10 years back, when he came here as the US President. To assess someone in a few meetings is tough. Rahul Gandhi’s personality has changed since then. He’s gained a lot of experience,” he said.

On Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said: “Secretary of Defense Bob Gates and the Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh both come across as having a kind of impassive integrity”. The UPA government, led by Singh, was in power for part of Obama’s decade-long tenure from 2009 to 2017.

The comment on Sonia Gandhi was something hard to be believed had come from Barack’s pen.
