The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) opened a new depot for iron ore stock at Kumhar Marenga in Jagdalpur district of Chhattisgarh.

The depot has been set up in the siding of the railway station located at Kumhar Marenga, Jagdalpur. On Monday, NMDC Director (Production) D K Mohanty and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Anoop Satpathy inaugurated the newly constructed railway siding depot.

Mohanty informed that the depot has the capacity to store 300,000 tonnes of iron ore. It has been established jointly by NMDC and the Railways. NMDC has invested capital in building an iron ore depot and railway siding.

The company had been preparing for a long time for a permanent means for iron ore storage. Country’s largest iron ore producer has two mechanised mines Kirandul and Bacheli in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district that have lion’s share in NMDC’s output.

Satpathy said with the opening of new railway siding, work will increase in both the transport and supply areas of iron ore. This will also increase employment opportunities for the local people.

The purpose of the depot is to transport iron ore from Kirandul-Bacheli and stock in the depot. The target is to provide uninterrupted iron ore supply to Nagarnar Steel Plant and Steel Plants at Visakhapatnam through the depot. Apart from this, iron ore can also be supplied to Chhattisgarh steel industries from this depot.

Chief General Manager (Kirandul) Vinay Kumar, Chief General Manager (Bacheli) P K Majumdar, Deputy General Manager (Personnel), Kirandul B K Madhav, heads of departments of Kirandul and Bacheli projects and president and secretary of trade union of both the projects were present.
