Guwahati, May 14

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha member from Assam, Biswajit Daimary resigned from the Upper House for the second time in a year.

Known as a close confidant of newly elected Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma, he is likely to be the next Speaker of Assam Assembly. His resignation will also pave the way for Sarbananda Sonowal to get elected to the Rajya Sabha and subsequently find a place in the Union Cabinet.

Daimary’s resignation was accepted by the Rajya Sabha Chairman on May 10. He had a short stint of just three months in his second term. Earlier on November 21, 2020, he resigned as a Member of Parliament from Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). Just ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council election that was held in December last year, Daimary quit BPF and joined the BJP.

Sarma was the brain behind pulling Daimary, who was once claimed to be the backbone of the Hangrama-led movement, into the BJP fold. National Democratic Alliance (NDA) later snapped its ties with BPF and went to contest the election with its new ally UPPL. In February 2021, Daimary was elected to the Upper house as a BJP member from where he resigned on May 10.

Daimary’s name did not figure in the state cabinet and hence political observers had been predicting that he could be the next Speaker of Assam Vidhan Sabha.

Sonowal would soon find a place in the Union Cabinet as he enjoyed support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
